Our 7 days Mount Kilimanjaro-Machame route offers an exciting and rewarding journey to the Roof of Africa. Known as the “Whiskey” route, it’s renowned for being a bit more challenging and slightly pricier than the Marangu route. Yet it’s highly popular for its breathtaking scenery and acclimatization advantages. This route is ideal for adventurous trekkers and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. It combines a stunningly diverse landscape with a manageable level of physical difficulty.
The Machame route takes climbers through five unique climatic zones, each with its own beautiful sights and environments. Beginning in lush rainforest, the path eventually leads to the expansive Shira Plateau, offering views that span across Kilimanjaro’s varied landscape. The trail features highlights like an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a challenging but rewarding climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a scenic traverse beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field. These sights create an unforgettable experience, though the popularity of the Machame route means trekkers will likely encounter other groups along the way.
Acclimatisation is a significant advantage of the Machame route. There are numerous “walk high, sleep low” opportunities that help prepare the body for the summit. This 7 days Mount Kilimanjaro-Machame itinerary includes an additional day for acclimatisation. This allows for a more gradual ascent and improving summit success rates. The journey culminates in an overnight ascent from Barafu Camp to the summit, followed by a descent using the Mweka route.
For those looking for an adventurous trek with striking, varied scenery and an excellent balance of challenge and acclimatization, the Machame route is a fantastic choice.Solo travellers: please contact us before booking.
